the king is dead

We went to see The Decemberists and Head and the Heart last night at the Aragon Ballroom.  The show was absolutely amazing.  If you don't know either of those bands, I encourage you to check them out.  While our relationship was slow to develop, The Decemberists have become one of my favorite bands.  The vocals of a band will ususally make it or break it for me.  At first the strange needling voice of Colin Meloy really bugged me, but the more I listened to him tell stories through song, I must have either gotten used to his voice or learned to appreciate it's unique characteristics.  Either way, it all works for me now and I love it.

This is a sketchbook blog though, right? Correct.  Let me get to the visual art.  One of the other unique things I appreciate about The Decemberists is that their album art, t-shirts, posters, and other merchandise are illustrated by the talented Carson Ellis who also happens to be Colin Meloy's wife (the lead singer).  She's got a sketchy, fairytale-like quality to her illustrations that I really love (almost as much as the music).

The two of them have also written/illustrated a book called Wildwood to be released at the end of August.  More on that when I get my hands on a copy...

H-definitely go see them. They hinted that they won't be touring again for a while...also, really cool that you will get in for 'free'.
