sunday sketch

I think I need to give some background on my artistic abilities.  I used to be fairly good at drawing/ painting/illustrating.  I took a few art classes in high school and was accepted into design school where I decided to major in architecture.  In between drawing perspectives of buildings, I was able to take an illustration studio and a few other art and design classes.  Then I graduated, started working, and stopped making time to sketch.

Apparently sketching is not like riding a bike.  You have to practice to get better and maintain your skills.  I see things differently and notice little details when I have to figure out how to draw them.  I miss this.  So I am making an effort to sketch at least once a week.  Warning: these beginning sketches are going to be quite horrible, but I'm posting them anyway so that you can see my progression (assuming I get better).

Today, I had a plan to go out to the park and sit in the sun sketching, but after I ran outside this morning in the 100 degree temperature, I was done with the sun.  So, I opted for sketching from a photo.  I'll buy you a beer the next time I see you if you can guess who this is:

pencil sketch, 10 min.

This makes me laugh....a lot.  I've got some work to do on drawing faces.  Practice will only make me better, right?

self-critique:
::  work on shading (maybe spend more than 10 min. per sketch)
::  try not to proportion the mouth to look like "the joker"
::  read up on proportions of the face...apparently I have forgotten the basics

If you have suggestions or critiques, please share them with me!

hmmm...... this is tricky. I was going to guess that it was you, but i don't remember you doing your hair like that, so then i decided I'd guess that it's Susannah because it still looks like a Simpson. But it's probably some famous person and I'm way off, right??!!

anyway, i love the sketches - practice makes perfect!

ok, I'll buy you a beer and then take it back. You got it right the first time, but then second guessed yourself! I have to say though, I am a little sad that you could recognize me. I was hoping I looked nothing like that sketch.

Good job though...I'll buy you a beer if you come visit!
