navy pier revamp

An international search for a design team to revitalize Navy Pier was announced last week.  The plan is to redesign the outdoor spaces along the south dock, east end, and west entrance.  Almost anything they do will be an improvement on what is currently a long expanse of concrete filled with tourists.

I tend to only venture down to the end of Navy Pier when requested by family and friends visiting Chicago for the first time.  The pier is unique to Chicago.  I get that.  Yet I still have to take a deep breath before beginning the trek down the 3,300 ft. promenade where I'll inevitably have to dodge little kids, parent's with strollers, and lollygagging tourists stopping to take photographs every few steps.  If you haven't been to the end of the pier and can moderately stand children, then the skyline view at the end of the pier is worth the walk...until you realize that you have to head through the crowd on the way back, too.  However, if there were little breaks of public gardens along the way and an oasis at the end (instead of concrete as far as the eye can see), then that might be worth multiple visits.  I look forward to seeing what the teams of designers come up with!
